~LaBefana~

This "gift" was given to me by my mother and was given to her by her grandmother ....now .... with love and the warmest of holiday wishes, I give it to you....God Bless and may the hope and love of LaBefana fill your souls each and every day....

Many years ago and many miles away, in the mountians of a wonderful land called Italy...there lived an old woman by the name of LaBefana. She lived all alone in her humble home and was diligent in her care of it ..... she cleaned and scrubbed it daily and was always thankful for her abode.
One day, near dusk, as LaBefana was sweeping and cleaning, three wisemen came to her door and knocked. "May we have a drink of water, kind lady?" asked one of the fine gentlemen..."we have been traveling such a long time and are so very thirsty." LeBefana being the kind soul she was immeadiately fetched the men a cup of water and bade them to sit down and rest...."Thank you so much kind lady" the men were grateful for the small gift. LaBefana asked them where their journey was taking them and for what purpose. The first wiseman answered her "We are going to pay homage to the ChristChild ... the son of God has been born in a far off land under the brightest star in the skies...he has been sent by our Heavenly Father and we go to worship and honor him..." "Oh My" said LaBefana..."what a wonderful thing you do." The wisemen spoke within themselves and then offered to take LaBefana with them....LaBefana thought and thought and then spoke regretfully.."no I cannot go .. I have much too much cleaning to do ... and I have stopped for too long already...thank you but no." The wisemen proceeded on their way and LaBefana went on with her cleaning ....as the hours went by she thought and thought ..."what kind of person am I that this house is more important than my Lord ....?" so she snatched up a cloth and tossed some trinkets and sweet cakes into it and broom still in hand dashed out of her house in search of the wisemen and ulimately the beloved ChristChild ..She searched and she searched and she searched ....and yet she could not find them....her sorrow was much but she never gave up....

To this day ....LaBefana still searches ... each January 6th...she flies thru the skies upon her broom, with her sack of trinkets and sweets, and where she sees the shoes of a child.... she fills them with goodies. For in each child lies a small piece of the ChristChild and Gods divine love...

With all my love ....and in honor of my beloved mother...justsandi
